It actually makes sense in terms of the energy involved in making the music and the emotional expression it engenders. However, I was under the impression that Reich was somewhat critical of jazz music itself and felt it was chaotic and undisciplined. I know his favorite composer was Beethoven so I'm not sure how he reconciled the two.
